HALLOWEEN

HALLOWEEN COSTUME | SPIDER WEB

IMAGE | DALENA VINTAGE

It’s Halloween month and for the first time in YEARS I am all jazzed up to have a costume even though we really haven’t made any plans yet. There are several good ideas to be done, but sometimes those turn into big projects that I am not about to tackle so I set off to figure out something easy that hopefully doesn’t come off looking cheap and tacky like some costumes do.

On a late night trip to the store, I ran across this spiderweb gem below. SIDE NOTE: After this became my direction, I ran across this vintage costume image of this sassy lady in barely any clothing and a similar idea only I’ll end up looking more like a cartoon character and I can bet that if this lady came into the room everything else would stop and all eyes would be on her. I mean come on. I would never show that much of my body but good for her nice little 1920’s self.

Now if I really wanted to, I could have made this myself because it’s seriously just felt with a piece of ribbon but the older you get, the more you appreciate that saved time. Besides, they did such a great job I just bought it. The selling point for me was the dramatic stiffness and drape (if you want to call it that). Next spotted was this black faux fur collar so I threw that in for a little more sophistication. I mean if you are going to be a web, you might as well be a fancy one.  The next day, these fuzzy spiders were purchased at the local grocery store. I’m going to attach some to the web and maybe make some kind of spider head piece but that is phase 2.  Next, I may make some spider glasses by putting legs off the sides of my big black Jackie O sunglasses like this photo below I pinned from Martha Stewart years ago. The only thing I need now is a black dress which I can wear again and some fishnets.  So, this is super easy and isn’t going to break my bank account.  I’m trying to get my husband to dress up like a giant spider, so I can put him on a string and drag him around all night.  I doubt we will be winning any contest, but you can’t go wrong with all black right?

HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS

Halloween décor is a work in progress and I think after a few years I may have it dialed out but for now I’m working with some random things.  First off, we have this weird arch in between our dining and living area.  Some 90’s design element that also probably involved some accent walls in some horrible colors.  I’ve always wanted to cover it somehow so for this month, I’ve put some spooky cloth draped over it with some skeleton garland hanging off.  I’m kind-of digging how the light shines through it but this obviously is not a permanent solution to the design faux pas.

The dining area is decked out in a skeleton theme because I wanted to keep it more neutral.  You can’t tell by this image, but I did add a sorbet orange with black embroidery ribbon to this girl’s head to have a small pop of color just to make my husband not fall to sleep of boredom.

Creepy girl in the middle with red eyes?  She rides a tricycle around and cackles and her eyes glow.  I really had to have it for the peter pan collar and wanted to see what Charlie (our dog) would do, but he didn’t seem to care too much.  BUT when I pulled out my vintage papier-mache cat, he freaked out and now we can’t have that thing in the house, so he’s on the front porch. I think he thinks it’s a real something.
