BENEFITS OF BLUEBRRIES
Every morning I have a very specific routine timed down to the minute. If anything changes like someone text and I pause to answer or the dog has a flip out on his walk, it throws the whole timeline off. The easier, less stressful way to deal with this would be to just get up earlier. NOT A MORNING PERSON. Anyway, I have to have two things before I hit the office, an oat milk latte and fresh blueberries from PCC. (NOTE: I get the coffee someplace else just to make my morning extra difficult). I’m working toward a simpler life but also these two things make me happy, so I’m keeping this routine for now.
They (whoever they are) say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I’m not a heavy breakfast person unless it comes with a few morning cocktails but lets get real, I’m not independently wealthy, brunching with my friends daily having nothing else to do. I work like most people.
Over the years of many different morning diets I have found that berries are the very best thing for my system. I forgot to add, I do also add on a ginger kombucha for probiotic support and some sort of nut bar for protein. The berries are my little dose of happy and joy with lots of added benefits. Depending on the time of year, I will switch to raspberries as needed.
I wanted to focus on some benefits I’ve learned on blueberries after nerding out on google. These are not fancy FDA statements, just consistent information found on this lovely colorful superfood.
Low in calories. Who doesn’t love that one?
One cup has 25% of your daily allowance of Vitamin C and 4 grams of fiber along with Vitamin K and Manganese. These things help your blood retain the ability to clot and help prevent inflammation. Inflammation is a big one for me and the main reason I started eating these daily.
Blueberries are high in antioxidants. High consumption MAY help your body slow down the aging process and help your cells normally regenerate. [I’m going to go with HELL YES, THANK YOU].
They promote heart health. Among other things in this area, blueberries are shown to help reduce LDL cholesterol.
Blueberries are believed to help your brain function and may improve memory.
Natural aid in digestion. Just adding one or two cups of blueberries to your daily meal plan can help provide consistency in this area and keep the natural good bacteria in your gut working hard. Anyone that has knowledge on the benefits of probiotic health will know this is a plus.
Anthocyanins help with insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism in people managing Type 2 Diabetes. It makes it easier to balance your blood sugar along with maintaining a good diet and exercise.
These are just a few of the big ones that wowed me.
